Broken glass affects more than the pane

The frame may be damaged, loose glass may be unsafe and the property may be open to weather or access. We inspect the full area before choosing the repair.

Glass damage we secure

Patio or sliding-door glass exposed? Use Residential Glass, Window and Door Securing for emergency protection of the residential opening.

Protect the property, then replace the glass

Depending on the glass and frame, we may install a temporary cover, use plywood board-up, secure the door or replace the panel directly. Once the area is safe, we measure and install the correct glass.

Protection choice

Temporary cover, board-up or direct replacement

The right choice depends on the glass type, frame condition and whether the property can stay exposed. We use only the protection the job actually needs.

01

Temporary protective cover

Used when the opening can be protected without a full board-up and needs coverage until final glass work.

02

Board-up for exposed openings

Used when the glass opening is open, public-facing, large or unsafe to leave uncovered.

03

Glass replacement

Once the property is safe, we measure the opening and install or order the correct replacement glass.

Broken glass safety

What to do right now if glass is broken

Keep the area clear and approach the damaged opening only when it is safe. Do not put yourself at risk to take photos or move unstable glass.

  1. 1

    Contact emergency services when required

If anyone is injured, a break-in is in progress or there is a fire or immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service first.

  2. 2

    Keep people and pets away

Keep children, pets, customers and staff away from loose glass, sharp edges and the exposed opening.

  3. 3

    Do not handle unstable glass

Do not touch loose or hanging glass with bare hands, walk through the damaged area or attempt to board a large or elevated opening yourself.

  4. 4

Send photos from a safe position

When safe, photograph the full opening and surrounding frame. Send the photos with your location so we can confirm the next step.

After an incident

Photograph the damage before cleanup.

If the glass was broken during a break-in, vandalism, storm or impact, photograph the complete opening, the close-up damage and the point of entry before loose material is removed, when it is safe to do so.

Keep damaged hardware unless it creates a hazard, and ask your insurer before discarding it. BoardUp can provide job photos and an itemized invoice; the insurer or adjuster decides what the policy covers.

Commercial door glass option

Same-day commercial door glass replacement may be available.

When the correct commercial door panel is available and the door frame is suitable, BoardUp may remove the damaged glass and install the replacement during the same visit. Other glass types may need to be measured and ordered.

Broken glass questions

What customers ask when glass is broken

Can commercial door glass be replaced the same day without board-up?

For some commercial doors, yes. We first confirm the panel size, glass type and frame condition. If a matching panel is available, we install it immediately; otherwise we protect the door and return with the correct glass.

What should I do after glass breaks?

Keep people and pets away from loose or hanging glass. Do not touch unstable pieces or enter the damaged area. Contact emergency services first when required, then send photos from a safe position so we can confirm the next step.

Can you secure shattered glass temporarily?

Yes. Depending on the damage, we use a temporary cover, plywood board-up or another secure barrier until the correct glass is ready.

Is broken glass board-up the final repair?

No. Board-up or temporary cover is the emergency protection step. After the property is secured, the glass can be measured, ordered or replaced as needed.

Do you help with door glass, window glass and storefront glass?

Yes. We secure broken glass in windows, doors, storefronts, commercial entrances, patio doors, French doors and residential openings across Toronto and the GTA.

Can you help after vandalism or a break-in?

Yes. We secure glass broken during break-ins, vandalism or impact, then arrange the permanent glass or door repair.

Can I text photos before dispatch?

Yes. Text photos of the broken glass, the surrounding frame and the full opening so we can confirm what needs to be secured.
